Just the thought of it is enough to take your breath away.
Tom Sietas, 35, and Ricardo fought not to be the first to breathe in
underwater tanks – with winner Sietas clocking up an astonishing 18
minutes and 16 seconds.
The pair are national champions in their
respective homelands of
Germany and Brazil in the discipline of static apnea – holding the
breath underwater.
The amazing showdown took place in Changsha in China where both men entered his own transparent tank.
The temperature was gradually raised from a chilly 5C to 40C.
The technique apparently aids the competitors on one hand.
But because their bodies consume an increasing amount of blood oxygen as the heat rises, they are at risk of sudden death.
The marathon session, saw Sietas – who has been a free diver since
2000 – smash his own record of 17 minutes and 28 seconds, set in Madrid
four years ago.
